Windsurfing Bonaire
Windsurfing Bonaire at Lac Bay
The extensive reef that surrounds parts of Bonaire is not only a haven for scuba divers and snorkelers, but the protection that it imparts to some of the bays and inlets on the island also makes Bonaire one of the best spots in the world for windsurfing.
Combined with the region’s trade winds, Bonaire is popular amongst beginner and professional windsurfers alike, and several competitions are held each year.
The most famous windsurfing spot in Bonaire is Lac Bay.
Lac Bay Conditions
A portion of the bay is kept free from ocean swells by the reef formations, making it the perfect spot for beginners to learn without having to worry about rough waters, harsh winds or dangerous underwater rocks.
At the other extreme, hardcore windsurfers can challenge themselves in the most exposed areas of the bay, where full force winds and ocean waves make for a thrilling experience.
Trade Winds Get Busy
Due to the fact that Lac Bay is part of a protected marine park, there is no chance that any development will negatively impact surfing conditions in the future.
From September to December, the winds are at their most mild, but from December on through to August the intensity really picks up – so don’t miss out on your chance to taste some of the most delicious waves in the Caribbean.
