Mangrove Forest

The Mangrove Information Center

The Bonaire Mangrove Forest is located amidst Bonaire’s National Marine Park and there you will find The Mangrove Information Center.

Providing a fun and exciting way to learn about the Mangrove Forest, the center offers guided kayak and solar boat tours for visitors.

An experience not to be missed as you easily maneuver through winding mazes of the groves in your sit on top kayak.

You will be amazed as you glide through the Mangrove Forest where you will see bird and marine life that are specific to the groves.

The center was established in 2002 by Gerard van Erp as a research facility and now it studies the preservation of Bonaire’s Mangrove Forest.

The center hosts guided tours led by experienced naturalists who offer information on such exhibits as the 7 x 7 aquarium built in partnership with the Rotterdam Zoo of the Netherlands and the interesting assortment of wildlife that call this area home.

Endangered Ecosystem

Mangroves are quickly becoming endangered and the center is managing to keep one step ahead in the study of these amazing trees.

An exciting kayak ride allows easy maneuverability through the groves for beginners as well as for the experienced enthusiast.

There is also a tour aboard a solar powered outboard which is free of noise and pollution, it a kayak is not your ideal way of traveling.

Having four identified species of the mangrove in the forest, the center serves a vital role in helping to preserve these slow growing trees found only in salt water coastal areas.

Requiring fresh water to live, these trees have marveled ecologists with their ability to desalinate for survival.

In addition to their ability to desalinate, the roots of the mangrove provide a natural habitat for oysters and other marine life.

As research of this ability is just now on the cutting edge, The Center is ahead of its time concerning these studies.

Sea & Discover Program

The Mangrove Information Center, located in Lac Bay, offers one and two hour guided kayak and solar boat tours.

The two hour mangrove tour includes a snorkel adventure.

You can even get free transportation to the center.

To get a first-hand look at the mangrove forest underwater, Bonaire’s Marine Education Center offers an opportunity to snorkel through their Sea & Discover program.
