Getting Around Bonaire

Getting Around Bonaire

No matter where you visit, some of the most helpful information you can have is about how to get around the city, town, state, country, or island.

Bonaire is a very unique place when it comes to traveling the island.

Why, you ask? Because unlike most islands Bonaire doesn't have a bus system.

But getting around the island is easy and you have a lot of choices in transportation.

Bonaire’s modes of transportation on the island are rental cars, taxis, bicycles, donkeys and goats.

I think rental cars are the best option to get around Bonaire.

I like to be able to go when I want, and having your own rental vehicle makes that easy!

There are plenty of car rental companies here in Bonaire.

As long as you have a Canadian, European, or American driver’s license, you can get a rental car.

Some rental car companies in Bonaire require you to be at least 21 years old while others may require you to be 26 years old or over. Most car rental companies are between these two age requirements.

Taxis are readily available on the island, but should only be used on short trips or trips into main towns.

Unmetered taxis usually have fixed rates for distances and points of interest.

The unmetered taxis are more plentiful than the metered taxis.

The unmetered taxis are great modes of transportation if you want a guided tour of the island.

The cab drivers are great guides and you can learn alot about Bonaire from them.

Bicycles can be rented just about anywhere in Bonaire. You can find numerous bicycle rental shops in Kralendijk, which is the capital of Bonaire.

Biking is one of the preferred transportation methods by locals and tourists who wish to see the island on their own terms and at their own speed (and get some great exercise).

There are lots of bike trails you can ride on ranging from easy to advanced.

Make sure you bring plenty of water on your biking trek. Remember, Boniare is a desert island.

If you find a stray donkey or goat (or even someone who will let you ‘rent’ the animal), you can use them as transportation to get around the island.

Getting around Bonaire can take you a lot longer than a car would, but can be a great adventure (especially if the donkey or goat has his or her own agenda and schedule).

It's unusual that Bonaire has no public bus system or ferry system exists in Bonaire. Most Caribbean islands have some sort of public transportation system.

The only way to get to Bonaire is by boat or plane.

(It's an island, remember?)

If none of the above transportation choices light your fire, you can always walk to wherever you want to go.
