Cycling in Bonaire
Cycling in Bonaire is a suprise to some visitors to the island.
Not every aspect of Bonaire’s natural beauty is directly related to the sea.
The inland can be a lot of fun to explore, and in fact Bonaire possesses some of the best on-road and
mountain bike trails
in the Caribbean.
As with many small islands, vehicle traffic on local roads is limited, so cyclists can take advantage of many miles of safe, paved travel, visiting such attractions as the impressive salt mountains or just enjoying the great weather.
If you are feeling more adventurous, then you can leave the beaten path to take a trek into Bonaire’s desert-like interior regions.
There are over 300 kilometers of marked trails that crisscross the island, ranging from fast sandy runs to challenging hill climbs carved into the rock face.
Many of the trails combine the rush of mountain biking with the pleasure of stopping off at an isolated cove or beach to relax or even enjoy a cooling swim before the next leg of your journey.
It is here where you can see some of the more hidden wildlife that the island has to offer, such as
iguana
and pink flamingos.
Mountain biking and cycling in general is a great way of staying in shape while on vacation – something most of us forget about – and when you can combine it with sight-seeing, you can kill two birds with one stone.
There are several bike rental agencies on the island that will get you started on your self-guided island tour in no time.
