The Bonaire Donkey Sanctuary and The Donkey Paradise Safari Park
The Bonaire Donkey Sanctuary was started when many animals were found stranded and homeless. They were in need of a home after they had been replaced by machinery in the work force.
Your are almost at the Donkey Sanctuary on Bonaire!
The sanctuary was built to provide a home to abandoned, orphaned, and sick or injured donkeys. In 2004, a survey done on Bonaire produced 211 donkeys that were homeless and left to fend for themselves, but they were brought to the sanctuary.
By 2006 the number had grown to over 300.
The Sanctuary strives to give the otherwise homeless animals an adequate, safe, and peaceful place to live.If you want to help, you can actually foster-a-donkey no matter where you live.
How cute he is!
The Bonaire Sanctuary is open everyday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. for visitors. Although there is not a required entrance fee, donations are always welcomed, appreciated, and acknowledged.
School field trips often visit the sanctuary. It is suggested by the sanctuary that you bring some fruit or bread with you to feed the donkeys. The sanctuary is not the only place to see these amazing creatures. The Foundation opened The Donkey Paradise Safari Park in March of 2006.
The Donkey Paradise Safari Park does have a small entrance fee for all visitors. Adults pay NAF 10 ($6 USD) and children who are under 12 years old are charged NAF 5 ($3 USD).
The money generated at the Safari Park (like money donated at the sanctuary) is used to feed, house, maintain, and keep the animals healthy. The park is unique since you cannot drive through the park in a car, on a scooter, or on a bike.
